Detailed Compliance Breakdown

WOLONG implements a comprehensive marketing and production quality strategy across the electric motor supply chain, obtaining major global certifications to facilitate international market access:

  • ISO Standard: Wolong is an ISO 9001 certified manufacturer. This baseline standard forms a critical gate for crossing international borders and satisfying rigorous engineering audit requirements.
  • NEMA Standard: To verify compliance with NEMA mechanical and electrical performance specs, Wolong motors undergo full efficiency, insulation resistance, starting current, torque, and vibration testing. Our low-voltage configurations carry both UL and CSA certifications.
  • IECEx and ATEX: For hazardous locations, Wolong motors have been fully verified under Nemko and other notify bodies. This makes them fully compliant for Zone 1, Zone 2, and dust-ignition hazardous areas throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
  • TESTSAFE Standard: As the largest coal product certifying body in the Southern Hemisphere, obtaining TestSafe certification opens up access to the Australian coal mining industry, enhancing our global reputation.

In-Depth Anatomy of Explosion Proof Motors

A breakdown of the precision components and engineering configurations that ensure high safety and durability.

Rotor design

Advanced Rotor Construction

Our rotors feature a robust squirrel cage design. Cast aluminum is widely utilized, produced using either centrifugal casting or high-pressure die-casting techniques. This process pours molten, pure aluminum directly into the slots of the rotor core, creating a single-piece construction that integrates the rotor bars and end rings.

For larger-capacity motors, copper bar rotors are used, secured with high-grade welding procedures. The protective ring design on high-speed configurations further ensures stable mechanical operation under continuous load.

Stator wind and insulation

Heavy-Duty Stator & VPI Insulation

The motor coils are crafted using high-grade polyester film reinforced with glass cloth and high-mica-content tapes. After winding, the stator core undergoes a VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation) process, resulting in a solid, moisture-resistant assembly.

This process eliminates air gaps within the slots, providing high dielectric strength, thermal dissipation, mechanical rigidity, and resistance to environmental moisture and chemical vapors.

Heavy frame structure

High-Redundancy Motor Frame

The motor frame is designed using digital platforms for multi-physics structural and fluid simulations (CFD). The frame is cast from high-strength cast iron (or fabricated steel as an alternative), featuring generous safety margins and optimized cooling rib profiles.

This heavy construction limits mechanical vibration, provides high shock resistance, and maintains low running temperatures to prolong bearing and insulation life.

Low noise fan hood system

Low Noise Fan Hood System

Designed to minimize aerodynamic noise, this system comprises a structured fan cover, air guide cylinder, protective window, and silencer plates. The side air inlets bypass obstacles at the back of the motor to optimize airflow.

It integrates sound-absorbing materials to damp high-frequency whistling, while carrying an IP22 safety rating to prevent accidental physical contact with the fan blades.

Global Applications & Strategic Localized Scenarios

Powering critical systems across heavy industries in challenging global environments.

Wolong's engineering footprint spans 39 manufacturing sites and 4 global R&D centers across the UK, Germany, Austria, China, Italy, Mexico, India, and Vietnam. This allows us to supply certified electric motors tailored for key industrial equipment, including high-capacity industrial fans, water pumps, gas compressors, and heavy excavation machinery.

Oil, Gas & Petrochemical

Designed to operate safely in refineries and drilling platforms where volatile gases are present. Our flameproof (Ex d) and increased safety (Ex e) designs prevent internal sparks from igniting external atmospheres.

Marine & Offshore Engineering

Featuring DNV, ABS, and Lloyd's Register type approvals, these motors are built to withstand saltwater corrosion, high humidity, and high structural vibrations on marine vessels.

Mining & Tunnel Excavation

Our Morley series tunnel-boring and coal-cutter motors are built to withstand heavy physical impacts, abrasive dust, and wet conditions in underground mining environments.

Whitepaper: Supply Chain Resiliency & OEM Procurement Framework

Why modern industrial enterprises source from China's optimized industrial manufacturing ecosystems.

1. China's Industrial Cluster Advantages

Sourcing explosion-proof fan motors directly from China leverages a mature industrial ecosystem. Shaanxi Nanfang Motor, in partnership with Wolong, utilizes a localized supply chain of high-grade electrical steel, synthetic resins, specialized bearings, and automated casting facilities. This cluster system reduces lead times and logistics costs while maintaining high manufacturing precision.

2. EPCM Procurement & Technical Selection Criteria

When engineering and procurement managers evaluate OEM suppliers, they prioritize risk mitigation. A reliable supplier must satisfy the following technical parameters:

  • Thermal Margin (Class H vs. Class F): Most designs use Class H insulation with a Class F temperature rise limit, providing an extra thermal buffer during voltage fluctuations or high ambient temperatures.
  • VFD Compatibility (Inverter Duty): Fan motors running on variable frequency drives (VFD) require insulated bearings (typically on the non-drive end) and VPI-treated windings to prevent EDM (electrical discharge machining) erosion and voltage spike damage.
  • Ingress Protection (IP55, IP56, IP66): For outdoor petrochemical use, sealing systems must prevent dust and water intrusion.

3. The Evolution of Green Drives: PM Motors (IE5)

As carbon taxes and environmental regulations tighten, industrial operations are transitioning to Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM). These drives maintain high efficiency even at partial loads, reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) over a typical 15-year operational lifecycle.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Technical answers to common engineering questions regarding explosion-proof fan motors.

What is the difference between Flameproof (Ex d) and Increased Safety (Ex e) motors?

Flameproof (Ex d): Designed with a robust enclosure capable of withstanding an internal explosion of gas or vapor without sustaining damage, and preventing the flame from propagating to the surrounding explosive atmosphere through joints or clearances.

Increased Safety (Ex e): Focuses on preventing arcs, sparks, or dangerous hot spots from forming on internal or external components under normal operating conditions by using high-quality insulation and enhanced mechanical clearances.

How does variable frequency driving (VFD) affect an explosion-proof motor?

Running on a VFD can cause additional heat buildup at lower operating speeds due to reduced fan cooling. Additionally, high-frequency voltage spikes can stress winding insulation. Therefore, VFD-driven explosion-proof motors must be certified for inverter duty, typically utilizing embedded RTD temperature sensors and insulated bearings to prevent damage.

Why is DNV Type Approval critical for marine-grade motors?

DNV Type Approval confirms that the motor design complies with strict maritime regulations. These standards verify that components can handle salt spray corrosion, pitch and roll tilting, high humidity, and structural vibration, ensuring safe operation in international waters.
