Analysis of the regional growth vectors, environmental regulations, and critical infrastructure projects driving electrical drive technologies in the Western Balkans.
Serbia's strategic position in Southern Europe has established it as a pivotal manufacturing and logistics hub. The nation is currently undergoing a structural transformation characterized by significant upgrades in heavy industries, energy generation, and raw material extraction. In particular, the modernization of large-scale enterprises such as the RTB Bor copper mining complex, the steel mill at Smederevo, and various thermal power stations operated by EPS (Elektroprivreda Srbije) has stimulated a surge in demand for highly reliable, explosion-proof, and high-voltage electric motor configurations.
Historically, Serbia hosts a deep-seated domestic motor manufacturing legacy centered around Subotica, home to the internationally recognized brand ATB Sever. Following the acquisition of the Austrian ATB Group by Wolong Electric Drive Group, this localized footprint has been systematically integrated into a global manufacturing grid. Today, regional industrial buyers benefit from the synergy of globally backed research facilities alongside local technical support, enabling fast delivery times, simplified customs operations under regional trade frameworks, and direct access to heavy-duty custom engineering services.
Moreover, modern procurement initiatives in Serbia are heavily aligned with the European Union's strict energy transition parameters. With the local adaptation of EU ecodesign requirements (specifically the transition to minimum IE3 and IE4 efficiency indexes for low-voltage induction motors), industrial operators are actively migrating away from obsolete systems. The deployment of advanced variable speed drives (VSD) combined with permanent magnet motors represents the gold standard for reducing operational costs and maintaining high environmental compliance within the Serbian petrochemical, metallurgical, and municipal water management sectors.

A granular examination of the raw material selections, thermodynamic optimization, and manufacturing techniques utilized in Wolong industrial motors.
The rotor features a highly optimized squirrel cage design, utilizing cast aluminum or high-grade copper bars. Cast aluminum rotors are produced using centrifugal casting or advanced high-pressure die-casting techniques, which directly cast pure aluminum into the rotor core slots. This yields a single-piece construction integrating the rotor bars and end rings, ensuring superior structural reliability and high starting torque properties.
For high-capacity or heavy-start motors, copper bar rotors are used. These feature manual or automated induction welding of the copper bars to the end rings, paired with high-speed balancing and custom retaining rings to ensure safe operation at elevated rotational velocities.
The stator coil utilizes premium electromagnetic wire wrapped in high-density polyester film and reinforced with mica-based insulating tape (with high mica content for extreme dielectric strength). Following insertion into the stator laminations, the assembly undergoes a comprehensive Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) process using high-grade, solventless epoxy resins.
This VPI procedure eliminates air voids within the slots, resulting in a solid, moisture-resistant block that offers excellent thermal conductivity, high mechanical strength to withstand electrodynamic forces during start-up, and class H/F thermal isolation characteristics.
Engineered using a multi-physics digital simulation platform that optimizes structural loads and thermodynamic fluid dynamics. The motor frame retains original patented configurations, constructed from high-tensile cast iron or heavy fabricated structural steel. The design provides extensive structural redundancy, low mechanical vibration, and ample resonant frequency margins.
This robust frame design ensures that Wolong motors successfully withstand external impacts, pipe-load stresses in pump installations, and high dynamic shocks typical in mine conveyor systems.
Our cooling system comprises a dynamic fan cover body, integrated air guide cylinder, protective debris window, and internal acoustic silencer plate. This layout minimizes acoustic emissions and reduces pressure losses along the airflow path.
Constructed with sound-dampening composites, the system provides effective heat dissipation while maintaining low operational noise. The design features IP22 minimum mechanical protection, ensuring personnel safety by preventing direct contact with rotating fan components.
How Wolong brought together century-old industrial motor companies to create a unified engineering powerhouse.
Accumulating abundant asset portfolios and brilliant technical experiences in manufacturing, WOLONG systematically expanded its global reach to establish itself as a primary manufacturer of AC motors and variable speed drives. A cornerstone of this expansion occurred in 2011, when WOLONG acquired a 97.94% controlling stake in the Austrian ATB Motor Group, one of the three major European motor manufacturers. This acquisition integrated the mining-specialist brand Morley and the custom generator and low-starting-current motor manufacturer Laurence Scott into Wolong's umbrella.
Morley brings nearly 130 years of history in design engineering for underground coal mines. Laurence Scott is renowned for supplying low-starting-current motors for complex infrastructure projects, nuclear power applications, and naval military vessels, having earned the Queen’s Award for three consecutive years.
In addition, Brook Crompton Motors joined the Wolong Group, bringing over a century of mastery in motor design and pioneered energy-efficient electric drive configurations, including the premium "W" and "10" low and medium-voltage motor series. In 2011, Schorch Electric Motor was acquired, bringing setting-the-standard heritage dating back to 1882 for petrochemical, pipeline, and heavy marine propulsion systems.
In the field of vibration technologies, Wolong established a joint venture with the industry leader OLI Brand in 1999, manufacturing global-standard MVE vibration motors and associated Ex-proof vibration sensors. This was further strengthened in 2015 when China's premier explosion-proof research and production center, WOLONG Electric Nanyang Explosion-proof Group Co., Ltd. (CNE), was integrated, providing high-voltage Ex d and positive-pressure Ex p systems for coal mines, oil refineries, and aerospace platforms.
In 2018, General Electric (GE) Industrial Motors became part of Wolong. As a pioneer in commercial and industrial motor manufacturing, GE brought deep engineering expertise in heavy-duty sectors, including oil and gas pipelines, mineral processing, cement kilns, and wastewater processing. Today, Wolong combines these historic brands to deliver unified, highly certified, and technically advanced motor solutions globally.

Next-generation motor efficiency, predictive diagnostics, and smart IoT control systems.
As the industrial sector transitions toward automation and carbon neutrality, our technological development is guided by three core initiatives:
We are expanding the development of our permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and synchronous reluctance technologies (SynRM). These systems operate without rotor electrical losses, maintaining high efficiency levels even under fractional load conditions. For Serbian industrial operations, this transition translates directly to reduced operational costs and lower thermal loads on mechanical installations.
By integrating OLI-derived Ex vibration sensors and temperature telemetry modules directly into the motor frames, we provide operators with real-time operational data. Advanced algorithms analyze vibration signatures and temperature changes to predict winding insulation wear or bearing fatigue before mechanical failures occur. This predictive approach minimizes unscheduled downtime in continuous-process industries, such as petrochemical plants and municipal water networks.
Modern power grids require mitigation of starting currents and power factor drop-offs. Our variable frequency drive (VFD) packages are designed to match motor impedance characteristics. By using Laurence Scott low-starting-current engineering and Schorch power electronic system setups, we ensure that heavy startups do not destabilize local industrial grids, while reducing the scale of upstream switchgear requirements.
