Ex d (flameproof) indicates the motor's enclosure is designed to contain an internal explosion of gas or coal dust without propagation. Ex de combines a flameproof (Ex d) main enclosure with an increased safety (Ex e) terminal box. The Ex e design provides extra protection against high temperatures and sparking at connection points, making it highly reliable for underground coal mines.
Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) extracts air pockets and moisture from the stator coils, filling them with high-mica insulation. This produces a solid structure that protects the stator winding from moisture, high humidity, vibration, and coal dust, ensuring high dielectric strength.
