Deep dive into global procurement frameworks for increased safety and hazardous environment motors.
In modern process plants, offshore installations, and mining projects, selecting the appropriate electric drive is not just a commercial purchase; it is a critical safety and compliance decision. Increased Safety protection motors (classified under the IEC/EN 60079-7 standard as Ex eb or Ex ec) are designed to provide enhanced security measures. These measures prevent the generation of high temperatures, electric arcs, or sparks on inner and outer components during normal service or specified overload conditions.
Unlike flameproof enclosures (Ex d) that contain an internal explosion, increased safety motors (Ex e) prevent the hazard from occurring altogether by utilizing superior electrical insulation, increased creepage and clearance distances, and robust thermal protection systems. For procurement managers, this represents a significant reduction in overall equipment weight, lower thermal footprint, and an optimized Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
How our integrated brands resolve critical operational requirements across hazardous sectors.
Different kinds of Ex certificates for your specific process safety rules. Our high-voltage motors are deployed globally in refining, piping, and liquefaction plants, ensuring zero ignition potential in gas Group IIA, IIB, and IIC environments.
IE3, IE4, and IE5 standards are fully available. We integrate permanent magnet synchronous designs with frequency drive optimization to deliver substantial electricity conservation and lower thermal emissions.
A comprehensive portfolio covering mining, chemical processing, maritime, and public infrastructure. Custom mechanical outputs are adapted for fan blower stations, slurry pumps, and material handling systems.
By acquiring the world's most trusted manufacturers, Wolong has synthesized centuries of engineering experience into a single product platform.
In 2011, WOLONG successfully acquired 97.94% of the Austrian ATB Group, positioning itself as one of the three major motor manufacturers in Europe. The ATB group incorporates specialized mining brand Morley and the UK’s legendary Laurence Scott.
Morley motors, boasting a 130-year history, are synonymous with underground coal mine resilience. Laurence Scott has famously supplied engineered motors for nuclear power generation and low-starting current generators for marine vessels, receiving the Queen’s Award for three consecutive years.
Furthermore, Schorch Electric Motor joined Wolong in 2011. Established in 1882 in Germany, Schorch sets the standard for high-power drive systems in water distribution, shipbuilding, and steel processing. By integrating GE Commercial & Industrial Motor divisions in 2018, Wolong established absolute design superiority across all industrial sectors.

Our rotors feature premium cast aluminum or copper bars depending on the application scale. Centrifugal aluminum casting or high-pressure die-casting processes produce single-piece structures that integrate the rotor bars and end rings, preventing internal air pockets or balance anomalies.
For high-capacity, high-speed applications, specialized copper bar rotors utilize structural containment rings and precision induction welding to withstand massive centripetal and electromagnetic forces without thermal distortion.
The winding coils utilize high-grade polyester film reinforced with glass cloth and wrapped in rich-mica tape. Once inserted, the stator undergoes our proprietary Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) process with solventless epoxy resin.
This process cures the stator into a moisture-resistant, mechanically rigid structure with outstanding thermal dissipation. It effectively eliminates corona discharge, ensuring reliable electrical performance over decades of operation.
Our motor frames are engineered using multi-physics structural and fluid simulation tools. We utilize high-grade cast iron or structural carbon steel to ensure substantial mechanical rigidity and high vibration resistance.
The optimized outer cooling fins ensure efficient heat dissipation under low airflow conditions. This design helps keep the motor's surface temperature well below critical ignition thresholds in Zone 1 and Zone 2 environments.
The ventilation system is designed to minimize aerodynamic turbulence and noise. It features a compact air guide cylinder, structured protective window, and integrated silencer plates.
The side-inlet design optimizes air flow dynamics and maintains an IP22/IP55 ingress rating. Integrated sound-absorbing materials significantly lower decibel outputs, ensuring a safer and quieter workplace environment.
Wolong motors undergo rigorous verification protocols to comply with regional and international standards.
Operating in hazardous environments requires strict compliance with international safety standards. Shaanxi Nanfang Motor provides products that comply with key global standards, helping operators meet regulatory requirements and bypass technical trade barriers.

Flameproof motors (Ex d) are designed with a heavy enclosure to contain an internal explosion without allowing the flame to ignite the surrounding atmosphere. In contrast, Increased Safety motors (Ex e / Ex eb / Ex ec) focus on preventing hot spots, sparks, or arcs from occurring in both internal and external components. This design results in a lighter weight and smaller foot print for the same power rating.
Increased safety motors classified as 'eb' are certified for Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas hazardous areas. Motors classified under 'ec' (formerly Ex nA) are certified for Zone 2 conditions. They are commonly applied in petrochemical plants, refineries, chemical dosing, and ventilation systems where explosive gases are rarely present in normal operation.
As an authorized partner of Wolong, we offer three-phase asynchronous motors compliant with IE3 (Premium Efficiency), IE4 (Super Premium Efficiency), and IE5 (Ultra-Premium Efficiency) standards. We help ensure compliance with regional efficiency regulations, including the European Union's Ecodesign Directive, China's GB18613 standards, and US NEMA requirements.
Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) ensures that the insulating resins completely penetrate the winding slots, eliminating air voids. This prevents partial discharges (corona effect), increases mechanical resistance, and improves heat transfer from the windings to the stator core. This process helps extend the motor's operating life under severe variable-frequency drive (VFD) duty cycles.
Yes, our entire line of increased safety and flameproof motors can be engineered with VFD-rated insulation systems. They are equipped with RTD thermal protection sensors in the windings and insulated bearings on the non-drive end (NDE) to prevent damage from shaft currents.
