Engineering Lab and Design Center

Global Industrial Status & Variable Frequency Demands

Modern heavy industries are undergoing a major transition driven by decarbonization, digitalization, and functional safety standards. Electric motors account for over 65% of all industrial electrical energy consumption. Consequently, updating infrastructure to use higher efficiency classes (IE3, IE4, IE5) is no longer just a regulatory compliance matter, but a primary requirement for operational survival.

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) technology has become the core standard for large-scale municipal, maritime, and oil and gas processing stations. By adjusting torque output to match real-time requirements, system engineers save substantial amounts of energy. However, running motors on frequency converters introduces risks, such as harmonic currents and electrical discharge wear on bearings.

Wolong addresses these challenges through integrated structural simulations and specialized winding designs (such as using insulation systems with corona resistance). This approach guarantees that our custom motor designs operate safely and reliably, even when subjected to the high-voltage spikes associated with high-frequency IGBT converters.

Why Sourcing From China Factories Offers Unmatched Efficiency

China's manufacturing ecosystem is built on integrated supply chains, automated precision machining, and specialized labor clusters. At Shaanxi Nanfang Motor Technology Co., Ltd, we leverage this model to optimize every step of production. Our facility groups have integrated raw materials processing, silicon steel sheet lamination, custom copper casting, and fully automated wire winding systems into a single regional network.

Our production workflow utilizes advanced Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) equipment and automated balancing tools, ensuring consistent quality while significantly shortening lead times.

Furthermore, our testing facilities are certified to carry out official rating assessments for UL, CSA, and Testsafe standards. By performing final mechanical and electrical load testing in-house, we eliminate transit delays and ensure that all machinery is ready for immediate field installation.

📜 A History of Strategic Acquisitions

How Wolong integrated premier global electric engineering brands to create an industrial powerhouse.

2011

Acquisition of ATB Group (Austria): Wolong acquired 97.94% of the ATB Group, gaining access to premier European motor manufacturing capabilities. This acquisition integrated the Morley brand (renowned for heavy mining equipment) and Laurence Scott (noted for low starting current systems and naval engineering).

2011

Integration of Schorch & Brook Crompton: By acquiring Schorch, Wolong added high-power drive systems for petrochemical and steel processing plants to its lineup. Integrating Brook Crompton expanded our low- and medium-voltage portfolio with high-efficiency motor options.

2015-2018

Acquisition of Nanyang CNE & GE Motor: In 2015, Wolong integrated Nanyang Explosion-Proof Group, China's leading developer of explosion-proof technologies. In 2018, Wolong acquired General Electric's (GE) Commercial & Industrial Motors division, incorporating GE's advanced design systems and heavy industrial experience.

🔩 Structural Component & Mechanical Integrity

An engineering breakdown of the structural components that define our high-performance electric motors.

Squirrel Cage Rotor Component

Precision Engine Rotor Design

Our rotors feature a robust squirrel-cage configuration. Depending on the size of the motor, we use either centrifugal casting or high-pressure die-casting to integrate the rotor bars and end rings into a solid assembly. For large-scale industrial motors, we employ copper bar rotors with reinforced end-ring welding. A high-strength retaining ring prevents deformation during high-speed operation, ensuring stable and reliable performance.

Stator Coil Winding Process

Advanced Insulated Stator Coil

Stator coils are wrapped with high-mica insulation tapes, backed by polyester film and glass cloth. Following winding, the stator core undergoes a full Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) process. The result is a solid, moisture-resistant insulation system with high thermal stability and dielectric strength, capable of withstanding harsh electrical environments.

Cast Iron Motor Frame

FEA Simulated Stiff Frame

All motor frames are designed using multi-physics structural and fluid simulations. Constructed from high-tensile cast iron or welded steel, the frame provides robust physical protection, optimized heat dissipation channels, and structural dampening to minimize vibration levels and protect internal components.

Low Noise Fan Hood System

Acoustically Optimized Fan Hood

The low-noise ventilation system consists of an aerodynamic shroud, an air guide cylinder, protective screens, and sound-absorbing silencer plates. Featuring a side-entry layout, the hood minimizes turbulence and noise from cooling airflow. Rated to IP22, the shroud prevents debris ingress and contact with the fan blades.

OEM Motor Project - Engineering FAQ

Answering the most common technical, certification, and procurement questions from global project managers.

What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx certifications for electric motors?

ATEX is a mandatory European Union directive governing equipment safety in explosive atmospheres. IECEx is an international certification scheme recognized globally. While ATEX is legally required within the EU, IECEx facilitates compliance and acceptance across multiple international jurisdictions without needing redundant local certifications.

How does Wolong guarantee motor safety in VFD applications?

Variable Frequency Drives can generate high-voltage spikes and transient shaft currents. We mitigate these issues by utilizing Class F or Class H corona-resistant insulation systems, insulated non-drive-end bearings to block circulating currents, and grounding brushes to safely discharge shaft voltages.

Which cooling systems (IC codes) are available for high-voltage motors?

We support several cooling standards, including IC411 (totally enclosed fan-cooled), IC611 (air-to-air heat exchanger), and IC81W (air-to-water cooled). We select and customize the cooling system based on the application, surrounding environment, and duty cycle.

What efficiency classes does your motor line support?

We supply motors covering IE3 (premium efficiency), IE4 (super premium), and IE5 (ultra-premium efficiency, primarily via PMSM technologies). This compliance helps operators meet international energy regulations and reduce running costs.

What customization options are available for OEM projects?

Our OEM services include customized shaft extensions, specific mounting frames, tailored terminal box orientations, anti-condensation heaters, built-in winding and bearing PT100 temperature sensors, and specialized marine or chemical corrosion coatings.

How do you ensure balance and low vibration in large motors?

Rotors undergo dynamic balancing at operating speed using high-precision equipment. We also perform multi-physics finite element analysis (FEA) during design to ensure natural frequencies are well clear of the running speed range, keeping vibrations within ISO 10816 limits.
