Integrating century-old expertise from Brook Crompton, Morley, Laurence Scott, Schorch, ATB, and GE Commercial Industrial motors to deliver unparalleled build quality.
Flameproof induction motors are the foundational safety components in modern hazardous-area processing plants. Operating in atmospheres containing explosive gases, dusts, or volatile fibers, these machines must prevent internal ignition sources (like sparks or hot spots) from contacting external flammable materials. The global demand for these robust machines is climbing, catalyzed by tightening safety mandates and strict environmental metrics across oil & gas, chemicals, offshore processing, and underground coal mining.
Industrial trends show a rapid transition toward high-voltage variable-frequency systems and permanent magnet technologies. By shifting from standard fixed-speed systems to intelligent variable frequency drives (VFDs), operators achieve substantial energy savings and lower mechanical fatigue. This transition, however, demands precise thermal and electrical modeling. Variable-speed flameproof motors must be engineered to avoid critical resonance frequencies and overheating at low speeds, using techniques such as custom VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation) insulation systems and reinforced bearing arrangements.
For global procurement managers, balancing regulatory compliance, production lead times, and financial optimization is vital. China's manufacturing landscape, led by Wolong's Nanyang production base, offers clear structural benefits:
Over decades, WOLONG has successfully consolidated world-renowned electric motor brands, blending historical expertise with modern production capacity.
WOLONG acquired a 97.94% stake in the Austrian ATB Group, positioning itself as a premier European motor manufacturer. This brought the century-old Morley brand (synonymous with underground mining reliability) and Laurence Scott (low starting current specialist supplying nuclear and marine naval systems) under one global banner.
Brook Crompton brought over a century of electric motor design expertise. Their premium "W" and "10" series low, medium, and high-voltage motors are known for energy savings and reliable operation in challenging industrial environments.
Schorch (founded 1882) is a standard-setter for customized drive systems in oil & gas, chemicals, and maritime projects. Partnering with OLI, the global leader in industrial vibration motors and Ex-proof vibration sensors, Wolong delivers highly tailored solutions for complex industrial processes.
In 2015, China's largest explosion-proof research and manufacturing base, Nanyang Explosion-Proof Group, integrated with WOLONG. This was followed by a strategic partnership in 2018 with General Electric's Commercial and Industrial motor division. The addition of GE's expertise in heavy industries helped solidfy WOLONG's status as a global pioneer in electric motor technology.
A look at the specific engineering decisions, materials, and processes that contribute to the performance and safety of our flameproof motors.
The rotor utilizes a squirrel-cage configuration, featuring cast aluminum options produced through centrifugal or die-casting methods. This results in a one-piece component with integrated rotor bars and end rings, delivering consistent starting torque. For higher-capacity motors, copper bar rotors with robust brazing are used. The design also features structural ring protection for high-speed applications, ensuring mechanical stability under varied loads.
Built using polyester film combined with glass-cloth reinforced, high-grade mica tapes, our stators undergo a thorough Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) process. This process produces a solid, void-free winding structure that offers resistance to moisture, mechanical stress, thermal expansion, and electrical tracking.
The motor frame is developed using digital simulations that model structural stresses and fluid heat dissipation. Cast from high-tensile iron (or fabricated steel as an option), the frame provides structural support, heat dissipation properties, and resonance isolation, enabling the motor to withstand industrial impacts and run cooler.
The fan cover assembly is engineered to reduce motor noise while keeping dimensions compact. The side-entry air intake avoids blockages behind the motor and reduces turbulence. Integrated noise-damping components help lower the overall decibel levels. An IP22 rating prevents accidental contact with the fan, balancing safety and airflow.

IECEx & ATEX Standards: Vital for European and international projects. Our explosion-proof and flameproof motors meet Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas safety classifications, alongside Zone 21 and Zone 22 combustible dust standards.
NEMA Standards: For North American industrial markets, we offer UL and CSA listings. Rigorous testing validates efficiency, starting torque, insulation resistance, and vibration limits.
TestSafe Standards: This certification opens pathways for Chinese-manufactured mining motors to enter Australia and the Southern Hemisphere's coal mining sectors, meeting local underground electrical equipment codes.
Operating across diversified production bases in China, Vietnam, the UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, Serbia, Mexico, and India, WOLONG motors run equipment in a variety of challenging environments:
Providing power to high-pressure pumps, compressors, and ventilation systems in refineries, LNG terminals, and offshore drilling platforms. Designed to withstand corrosive marine environments and explosive hydrocarbons.
Equipped for underground coal mines where combustible dust and methane gas pose safety challenges. Built to drive conveyors, ventilators, and mineral processing machinery under constant mechanical loads.
Developing specialized low-vibration, low-starting-current generators and pump motors that satisfy safety directives for nuclear cooling loops and municipal power generation plants.

A flameproof motor (typically certified under 'Ex d' or 'Ex db') features an enclosure engineered to contain any internal explosion of gas or vapor. The joint pathways (flamepaths) are precisely machined to cool exiting combustion gases, preventing them from igniting the surrounding hazardous atmosphere.
Motors driven by VFDs are subject to increased thermal stresses and electrical bearing wear due to common-mode currents. Our designs utilize insulated bearings, VPI-insulated windings, and embedded RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors) to monitor and protect the motor under variable speeds.
While they share technical roots, ATEX is a European union directive, IECEx is a voluntary global scheme, and EAC Ex is required for customs clearance in the Eurasian Economic Union. WOLONG's flameproof series carries multi-certification plates, simplifying compliance across regional project sites.
Water cooling provides efficient thermal dissipation without relying on airflow, which can be restricted in enclosed locations. It helps reduce noise, eliminates dust circulation, and supports compact footprints in marine and high-ambient mining setups.
