Explore the Wolong AdvantageModern heavy industry operates under stringent international regulatory policies. Procuring explosion-proof motors requires navigating complex regional frameworks to ensure personnel safety and operational continuity.
Procuring entities in Europe mandate strict adherence to ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. In parallel, global operations look to IECEx international pathways. The integration of CE certification ensures the free movement of machinery within European economic zones while maintaining rigorous safety ratings (Ex d, Ex e, Ex nA, Ex p).
Global procurement offices prioritize explosion-proof motors that function seamlessly with modern variable frequency drives (VFD). VFD compatibility ensures precise speed control, minimal starting current inrush, and maximum thermodynamic efficiency under varying structural loads.
Operating critical machinery in extreme conditions demands immediate access to spare parts, structural certification validation, and field service expertise. Procuring from Wolong provides the leverage of global engineering offices and regional distributors capable of quick response.
Deep dive into the structural layout and high-grade materials that form the basis of Wolong's explosion-proof machinery reliability.
Our rotors feature a robust squirrel-cage design, utilizing cast aluminum structures. They are manufactured using centrifugal aluminum casting or die-casting techniques, where molten pure aluminum is poured directly into the slots of the rotor core. This results in a single-piece construction that integrates the rotor bars and end rings, guaranteeing structural integrity and outstanding torque properties. For larger capacity systems, copper-bar rotors are employed, featuring reliable bar securing and end-ring welding procedures. A protective ring design on high-speed motors further ensures the reliable operation of the copper-bar rotor at high speeds.
The winding coils are crafted from high-grade polyester film reinforced with glass cloth. They utilize low-powder mica tape with high mica content or medium-powdered mica tape with an abundance of mica. Following the advanced VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation) process, a pristine white coil insulation structure is formed. Once the billet is extracted from the wire, it proceeds through the VPI process to transform into a finished unit. The winding and insulation systems are meticulously engineered to provide exceptional electrical performance, mechanical strength, resistance to moisture, and thermal stability in harsh operational environments.
The motor frame utilizes a digital design platform for structural and fluid multi-physics field simulations. This design retains the original patents and structural design, employing high-strength cast iron (or steel as an alternative). The frame features exceptional structural redundancy, outstanding heat dissipation properties, and ample inherent frequency isolation margins. It is engineered to endure significant mechanical shocks, maintain a low vibration profile, and minimize temperature rise during continuous high-load operations.
The low-noise fan cover system comprises a fan cover body, an air guide cylinder, a protective window, and a silencer plate. Its compact structure and lightweight design facilitate vibration reduction. The air inlet is situated on the side, optimizing the clearance behind the motor to minimize adverse ventilation effects and noise caused by energy loss during air propagation. The system incorporates sound-absorbing materials that lower overall motor noise. Additionally, the fan cover is rated IP22, ensuring that hands cannot come into contact with the fan, thereby combining safety with efficient cooling performance.
Through strategic acquisitions and alliances, Wolong has integrated key technologies from some of the world's most historic and respected motor manufacturers.
In 2011, Wolong acquired 97.94% of the Austrian ATB Group, a leading European motor manufacturer. This integration brought in Morley, with nearly 130 years of underground coal mining expertise, establishing a standard for reliability and power. It also integrated Laurence Scott, known for delivering low starting-current systems for British nuclear plants and naval vessels.
With over a century of experience in motor design, Brook Crompton joined the Wolong Group, bringing expertise in high-efficiency, energy-saving motor technology. Their premium Brook Crompton "W" and "10" series offer a complete range of low, medium, and high voltage AC motors suited for hazardous and harsh industrial environments.
Established in 1882, Schorch joined Wolong in 2011. Schorch offers high-quality drive systems globally, catering to large-scale infrastructure projects across oil and gas, petrochemicals, power generation, water management, shipbuilding, and tunnel applications.
In 2018, GE's commercial and industrial motor division joined the Wolong Group. As one of the oldest manufacturers of commercial electrical machinery, GE brought extensive manufacturing experience and technology, supporting Wolong's capabilities in heavy industries including cement, metal processing, and wastewater treatment.
In 2015, CNE (Wolong Electric Nanyang Explosion-Proof Group Co., Ltd.), China's largest explosion-proof motor research and production base, integrated with Wolong. For vibration equipment, Wolong's partnership with OLI has established a strong global presence in the vibration motor (MVE) and Ex vibration sensor markets.

Wolong's motor designs are certified by leading international testing bodies, facilitating compliance with regional explosion safety regulations.
Wolong implements a global marketing and certification strategy, securing major product qualifications to facilitate access to key international markets:

The hazard-area motor sector is evolving rapidly, driven by digitalization, energy efficiency mandates, and new safety protocols.
To reduce global carbon emissions and energy consumption, Wolong continues to transition its Ex motors from IE3 configurations to IE4 and IE5 standards. Utilizing permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) designs (such as the WEPM series), these systems reduce rotor electrical losses, maintaining high efficiency even during partial-load operations.
The integration of Ex-rated vibration sensors and smart thermal sensors allows operators to monitor motor health in real-time. By capturing parameters such as winding temperatures and stator shell vibrations, operators can implement predictive maintenance, helping to prevent catastrophic equipment failures in Class I Division 1 or Zone 1 environments.
Future iterations of Wolong's Ex motors will utilize advanced stator winding insulation structures. By incorporating nanotechnology-doped mica tapes and high-thermal-conductivity resins, these systems optimize heat transfer from the core to the outer frame, increasing motor life and reliability in high-temperature applications.

Find answers to common questions regarding explosion-proof motor design, testing standards, and compliance pathways.
ATEX is a mandatory European certification based on Directive 2014/34/EU, applicable to all equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres within the EU. IECEx is an international certification scheme recognized in multiple global jurisdictions, aiming to harmonize safety standards for explosive atmosphere equipment worldwide.
Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) replaces traditional varnish dipping. By using vacuum and pressure cycles to eliminate air pockets, the insulation resin fully penetrates the winding coils, enhancing dielectric strength, moisture resistance, heat dissipation, and mechanical stability in demanding conditions.
Ex d (flameproof) motors are designed with housing that can withstand an internal explosion without propagating it to the surrounding atmosphere. Ex e (increased safety) motors focus on preventing sparks, arcs, or hot surfaces from forming on internal and external components under normal and specified overload conditions.
Yes. The WEBP3, YBBP, and WEPM series are engineered for variable frequency operation. They utilize reinforced winding systems and insulated bearings (where required) to mitigate high-frequency voltage spikes and bearing currents associated with VFD operation.
Positive pressure (Ex p) motors are typically utilized in large-scale, high-voltage applications in hazardous areas (Zone 1 or Zone 2). By maintaining an internal pressure of protective gas (air or inert gas) higher than the external atmosphere, they prevent explosive gases from entering the motor enclosure.
Wolong motors hold TestSafe certification, a recognized standard for coal mining equipment in Australia. This certification simplifies compliance for coal mining projects requiring equipment suited for underground hazards.
